Liver Transplant for HIV Positive Patient:

Larry Kramer, 66, a renowned playwright and novelist in the US needed a liver transplant because of end stage liver failure caused by hepatitis B. there was one major catch, though. He was HIV positive (full story in Indian Transplant Newsletter Vol III, Issue 10).there was good news at the end of it all. After a 7-month wait on the transplant waiting list he received a liver transplant at the university of Pittsburgh medical center in December 2001. He was the tenth patient with HIV to be transplanted at the UPMC since 1997. According to John Fung, MD Chief of the UPMC division of transplantation, who led his, had been excellent that the use of new anti-hepatitis B medications should prevent the redevelopment of hepatitis B in Mr. Kramer.
