Efficient Home Dialysis System in the Offing

A major technological advance in a home dialysis system could make it possible over the next four or five years for patients’ nephrologist, at Cincinnati children’s Hospital Medical Center who has been working on this for more than a decade calls the system an intelligent continuous veno-venous hem filtration system. The system works by precisely tracking fluid extraction rates from the patients’ blood and automatically compensating for low blood pressure and other factors that can affect the process. Dr.Bissler said that this system could make the kinds of decisions that he would make in reaction to a patient’s parameters. It would make home dialysis more practical by reducing the odds of human error and reducing the need the medical supervision, if successful. The product could be on the market within four or five years, pending availability of more miniaturizes equipment and a review by the U.S. Food and drug Administration.
