Kidney Transplants - A perfect match & more |
Teresa Fleming, of Manchester Township, Pennsylvania, had a Kidney transplant in 1984 and went on dialysis after the graft failed eight years later. She had no idea that she was going to find her match- in more ways than one- somewhere cross the Atlantic. Teresa met Ian Fleming in an online chat room in 1997. Ian lived in Manchester, England. They were married after a brief courtship. Ian wanted to donate one of his kidneys to Teresa and yes, it was a perfect match. Following the surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, the couple was doing fine. From a husband donating a kidney to his wife, a brother donating to his sibling – not unusual but in this case a kidney was donated to Kenneth Kuhn, 48, by his brother Charles Kuhn, 51 who had gone into an irreversible coma following a heart attack. Charles Kuhn had indicated on his driver’s license that he was willing to be an organ donor. The Medical College of Ohio Hospital performed the procedure after obtaining approval from the court. Kenneth Kuhn was in a fair condition following the operation And finally, from an employee to her boss. Nancy Nearing’s kidney was removed laparoscopically on September 10, 1998 at Georgetown Transplant Institute in Washington, DC, before being transplanted into Art Helms, 49. Mr. Helms had polycystic Kidney disease, which is hereditary. Mrs. Helms was ruled out as a potential donor in case one of their children eventually needed a kidney.
